Muay Thai Coach
Alex Avila embodies the balance of discipline, skill, and mentorship both inside and outside his professional role. As a Defensive Tactics Instructor and Muay Thai Instructor, he is committed to equipping colleagues and community members with effective, safe, and responsible techniques. His approach emphasizes not only physical readiness, but also sound judgment and professionalism.
Beyond his instructional work, Alex brings a deep level of dedication and passion to the martial arts arena. His commitment to continuous improvement and teaching reflects a strong respect for the discipline, reinforcing his role as both a leader and mentor. Through his work, he strives to build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility in those he trains.
For over eight years, Alex has immersed himself in the art of Muay Thai, training under the legendary late Ajarn Mike Walrath, who instilled in him the values of humility, perseverance, and the joy of teaching. Alex’s journey led him to train at a Muay Thai camp under Grandmaster Ajarn Chai Sirisute, the pioneer who introduced Muay Thai to America and founded the Thai Boxing Association. There, Alex had the unique opportunity to train directly with some of the most influential mentors in the Pacific Northwest, including Greg Nelson, Bryan Popejoy, and Bryan Dobler—pioneers in spreading Muay Thai throughout the region.
While his competitive fighting career in the ring has concluded, Alex dedicates his time at Madhouse Gym to mentoring adults and children. His teaching philosophy is rooted in a progression-based approach: focusing first on proper technique and form, then allowing power, speed, and mastery to follow naturally through consistent practice. He emphasizes not only skill but character, instilling discipline, respect, humility, self-control, and fitness in every student. Alex sees martial arts as a lifelong tool—not just for self-defense, but for stress relief, mental clarity, and overall physical and mental health.
Alex’s martial arts journey has expanded beyond Muay Thai. At Madhouse Gym, he also trains in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and Krav Maga, constantly learning and refining new techniques. His goal is to achieve proficiency in these arts and share them with students, helping them develop skills, confidence, and resilience that extend far beyond the gym.
Outside of training and work, Alex enjoys spending time with his wife and family, exploring the outdoors through hiking, camping, hunting, and walking. These moments reflect his love of balance, nature, and personal connection—the same focus and dedication that define his professional and martial arts pursuits.
Alex Avila’s life is a testament to the power of discipline, the importance of mentorship, and the value of giving back. Whether in law enforcement or on the mats, he strives to teach, inspire, and help others reach their fullest potential.
